As I mentioned last week, fostering a sense of wonder in Z is a big deal to me, so much so that often when he asks me questions that begin with “How?” or “What?” my answer is “Hmmmmm…. I wonder!?!” I leave a moment or two for him to consider, and then ask “what do you think?” Many times he already knows the “right” answer to the question, and sometimes he comes up with the most delightful, imaginative explanations.
In this age of hyper scheduled childhood, paired with information & activity overload and well intentioned pc parenting, I’m afraid we’re rob our children of the opportunity to bask in wonder. Given what we already know about the health benefits of wonder in adults, seems like a good bet to encourage our children to relish it while the natural inclination exists.
While real life experiences of wonder are the best, we work a lot of wonder into our video curation as well. Last week I posted a handful of videos with awesome kids doing wonderful things, this week I’ve got a batch that we watch in awe of the humanity and nature showcased within.
This may be my favorite video of all time. I mean, lions in general are worthy of an immense about of wonder, but this relationship between Kevin Richardson and his lions (and hyenas) is nothing short of extraordinary.
This falls in the category “how can this even be possible?!?” I mean, there are people with extraordinary skills in this world. I’m so glad we have youtube to find them now.
Deciding to be unlimited by your circumstances. That’s a pretty freaking wonder-ful thing too.
Just to put things in perspective…
